As reported in InformationWeek, it seems like Sun may have jumped the gun about Apple including the Zettabyte File System in the next release of OS X, Lepoard.
“An Apple official on Monday said Sun Microsystems’ open-source file system would not be in the next version of the Mac operating system, contradicting statements made last week by Sun’s chief executive.” Jonathan Schwartz is the CEO.
“Brian Croll, senior director of product marketing for the Mac OS, said, “ZFS is not happening,” when asked whether Sun’s Zettabyte File System would be in Leopard. Instead, Leopard would use Apple’s current hierarchical file system, called HFS+.” He confirmed that Apple has never said ZDF would be a part of Leopard.
Leopard, Apple OS 10.5, is due to ship in October.
As we know, Apple doesn’t like to talk about products until released and I bet they really don’t like possible suppliers talking about yet-to-be-released products. Could Apple have cnahged their mind after the premature announcement?
Maybe only Steve knows. In the humorous blog, The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs, “Steve” writes, “In case you’re wondering, yes, this is what happens when you make a deal with Apple and then double-cross us by announcing it before we say you can.”
Loose lips sink file systems.
